Not many plants can survive in a desert because of the lack of water. However, cacti, small bushes, and short grasses can survive there.
A saguaro cactus is a tough cactus with huge roots. It's tough outer layer helps keep water in, and the huge roots help it gather water.

As I said, bushes can survive there. A good example is sagebrush. This plant lets the wind uproot it, then it spreads seeds as it blows around. These seeds grow into new plants which do the same thing.
